Introduction       [Program Overview]

The Sachem Youth Soccer League, in conjunction with NOGA Soccer are presenting the following programs to better instruct your children in the game of soccer.  We are sure that we are providing the best environment possible to help your child enjoy the game of soccer.

Adjusted Micro Soccer       Recommended Ball Size: 3

Objective:

Through the use of progressive, fun filled, skill-based practices and the adjusted Micro format, we will teach the basic techniques of the game. Dribbling, individual moves and the push pass are taught in an environment that enables all of the players involved to have fun and begin to become the master of the ball.

Description:

Master Coaches will instruct the SYSL coaches in the proper way to run training sessions while, at the same time, instructing the children. As the coach’s knowledge progresses, the Master Coaches will introduce the actual format of Adjusted Micro Soccer. This format is played in a grid 20 yards wide by 30 yards long. There are no other markings on the field. Two corner flags, which are protected on the bottom by plastic cones, define the goals. When the ball goes out of bounds, either of the coaches immediately rolls another ball into play. This enables the coach to involve all of their players, even the shy ones. Substitutions are made on the fly with no formal stoppages in the game. Roster sizes are 6 children and they play 3 vs. 3 on the field. The sessions will be held on Sundays. This is a non-competitive division.

Micro Soccer      Recommended Ball Size: 3

Objective:

To continue the child’s soccer education through repeated touches on the ball, in a small-sided situation.

Description:

We will have a Master Coach available for the first few weeks of the Fall season to reinforce our philosophy and methodology.

The game is played in a grid 20 yards wide by 30 yards long. Two corner flags, which are protected on the bottom by plastic cones, define the goals. There is a six-yard box on either side of the grid.  This box is to define the area that the “sweeper-keeper”* can use their hands, and to give players a definite line from which to take goal kicks. Unlike Adjusted Micro, there are formal stoppages of play.

Ø    When the ball goes out of bounds on the touchline (sideline), the ball is put back into play by placing the ball on the touchline and making a pass that must be square (perpendicular to the sideline) or backward (away from the goal that the player’s team is attacking).

Ø    When the ball goes over the goal line (end line) , and is last touched by the attacking team, the ball is placed anywhere on the 6 yard line and kicked up the field by the other team.

Ø   When the ball goes over the goal line and is last touched by the defending team, a corner kick is awarded.  The ball is placed on the corner of the field and the attacking team puts it back into play with a kick.

*The “sweeper-keeper” is the player who is designated as the goalkeeper for a period of time that should not exceed one quarter (10 minutes). This player is allowed to use their hands in the defensive six-yard box but is also a field player that can run anywhere on the field (and, yes…can even score goals!). A different color pinnie or shirt designates this player.

Tournament Team Program

Objective:

To prepare the serious player for Travel soccer, which will begin the following year.

Description:

All players who wish to be involved in this program are required to attend an extra training session each week in addition to their intramural training.  This group also plays an extra game each week on Saturday.  Games are not mandatory and the roster for the team changes each week.  This program requires a big commitment from both player and parent.  This is also a program that is still in its’ formative stages.  We have tried two different formats for this particular program and we will continue to experiment until we think we have gotten it right for the players.

Interleague Program

Objective:

To continue to provide a place for the intramural player who loves the game but does not want to make the commitment to Travel soccer.

Description:

When Travel teams are formed, many times we do not have enough players left in a particular age division to provide an in house division in which they can play.  As a result we participate in Suffolk County Interleague, a program that is run so those children might be able to continue to participate in playing this great game.  This program requires that you might have to travel relatively short distances to neighboring clubs, so your child may have an opponent on Sunday.

Travel Program

Objective:

To provide a place for the more advanced player (fourth grade and older).

Description:

Travel teams are formed for the more advanced player. Selection to a Travel team requires a large commitment on the part of the player. SYSL Travel teams are registered within the Long Island Junior Soccer League, which is the organization governing all travel soccer teams on Long Island. This program requires that you will have to travel throughout Long Island to neighboring clubs for any away games on your schedule.

Summary

This is a thumbnail sketch of the formal programs that the Sachem Youth Soccer League offers your children.

In addition, we have open play one evening a week during the Spring soccer season.  On that evening, we invite all SYSL players to come down to the soccer complex at Waverly Avenue and play pick up soccer.  No coaching is allowed.  There is always an adult present but we let the kids choose up sides and play on their own.  This is open to all ages, genders and levels of play.  The kids have a blast.

Hopefully this clarifies some of the things we are trying to accomplish as a Club.  We are continuing to provide first rate fields and what we consider to be state of the art training for your children.  If you wish further information about any of these programs, please feel free to ask any Board member.
