the 71s, who call themselves the “best LIJSL Select Team ever,”

As teenagers, the 71s won the Pocono Cup in Pennsylvania and played in the Dallas Cup in Texas and the 1987 Pelé Cup all over Brazil. With the World Cup being played in Brazil this past summer, the teammates, now in their early 40s, decided to have a reunion. So they met at Lily Flanagan’s in Babylon on June 14 and watched the Italy-England World Cup game from Manaus, Brazil, a place they had visited in 1987. Their coach, Bill Easteadt, even was there as the former teammates from all over the East Coast came to Long Island and the party lasted much longer than they had the room booked for. Seeing the publicity about the 71s, who call themselves the “best LIJSL Select Team ever,” was the LIJSL Select Team of boys born in 1972. This team had also won the Pocono Cup and played in the Dallas Cup as teenagers. They too were still in touch with one another so they challenged the 71s to a friendly game which took place on Saturday, August 23 at the New York Cosmos training field in the Mitchel Athletic Complex in Uniondale. Sachem Golden Eagles won both Sportsmanship and U-19 Division 1!!

The Sachem Golden Eagles capped their SYSL careers in a resounding manner.  They were runner’s up in the Long Island Cup and won both Sportsmanship and U-19 Division 1.  The Golden Eagles finished with an 11W-1L-2T record and the goal differential was an outstanding 46 goals for and 15 against in all competitions with 6 shut outs. Lifetime the team had 92 wins 24 ties and 54 losses. They went through a lot of ups and downs in their careers but a core group stuck together and persevered over time. Almost all the boys are attending college, quite a few are going to play soccer for their college teams.

Coaching and training this team was a collaborative effort.  Mike Donack and Stephen Byrne were the primary assistant coaches and Sandy Clavin and Kevin Organ were two of the best parent administrators I have ever been involved with. Sachem legend Frank Schmidt trained the boys until this year and my son Nick trained them in their final season.

I am going to take this opportunity to say good-bye to the coaching ranks of SYSL.  This was my third team and it’s time to make way for some younger talent.  Thanks to the Golden Eagles for a memorable last season and thanks to SYSL for their support over the years.

Yours in soccer, Al Micucci  (team picture above)

Travel Program

To provide a place for the more advanced player (fourth grade and older).
Travel teams are formed for the more advanced player. Selection to a Travel team requires a large commitment on the part of the player and parent. SYSL Travel teams are registered within the Long Island Junior Soccer League, which is the organization governing all travel soccer teams on Long Island. This program requires that you will have to travel throughout Long Island to neighboring clubs for any away games on your schedule.  Although travel soccer is a competitive program, our goal is to focus on development, respect, team unity and sportsmanship.  Teams are selected via "Try Out" process every June.
