Anyone wishing to referee for SYSL, regardless of age (minimum age is 10 years old) or experience is required to attend training that is given every winter (February/March) based on need. The clinics consist of learning the FIFA rules and the SYSL modified rules as they pertain to each age group. New and existing referees will then meet with the referee coordinator prior to each season.
Each year the referees that have taken the course are given SYSL referee shirts to wear while officiating. This is the first step in presenting a professional appearance on the field.
The usssoccer.com Referee Week in Review is designed to address the issues facing referees at all levels by using video highlights from professional games as well as the U.S. National Teams.
