  SYSL REFEREE EVALUATION FORM

Go Ahead, Ask The Ref

How do I become an SYSL referee?

Anyone wishing to referee for SYSL, regardless of age (minimum age is 10 years old) or experience is required to attend training clinics that are given during the offseason (Jan/Feb, Jul/Aug). The clinics consist of learning the FIFA rules and the SYSL modified rules as they pertain to each age group. Referees are given "on the field training" by rotating in and out of controlled scrimmages geared to different age levels of play.

At the end of the course they are required to take and pass a written test. This, along with the evaluations made during the practical portion of the clinics ensures that the referees that step onto the fields at the SYSL complex are knowledgeable in the rules of soccer.

Each year the referees that have taken the course and have passed the test are given SYSL referee shirts to wear while officiating. This is the first step in presenting a professional appearance on and off the field.

Before a referee is allowed to officiate a game in the center position, they are required to act as assistant referees (linesmen) under the supervision of an experienced referee. The Director of Referees evaluates each referee during the course of the year.

Meetings are held throughout the season to foster feedback both to the referees and from them as well.

REFEREE CLINICS

We hold January/February sessions and July/August sessions at the Waverly Ave. fields. Clinic makeup dates will be determined at the end of each course depending on need.

REFEREE MEETINGS

The first referee meeting is usually held 1 week prior to the start of each season. Game schedules for the first two weeks are given out to each referee in attendance. Additional meetings are held every two weeks during the season.
